Would you rather have talent or skill?
Careful with this one – while on the surface it may seem that the words are interchangeable, that’s not reality…
I’ve been grappling with this question for awhile now… It’s interesting to think about.
So…
What is Talent?
Here’s my definition:
Talent is: latent potential
In truth, talent could be described as raw material, what you bring to the table naturally, potential.
How many times have you seen a talented person “not live up to their potential?”
Intuitively we seem to know that in a person like that, some collection of natural abilities reside, that if focused could do great things.
And Skill?
I think of skill, or someone’s skill level as: a reference point
It’s developed by the act of honing your competencies, abilities (your talents) toward mastering a “craft.”
Your skill level is basically the reference point of where you are in the process toward mastery.
A quick recap:
Talent is your latent potential, your raw materials, the “hand you’re dealt” at birth.
Your skill is the measure of proficiency you have achieved in focusing your talent toward mastering a particular craft.
That brings us to…
Mastery
Simply put, Mastery is the highest skill level attainable with your given talents.
It’s the pinnacle of achievement – rarefied air.
Working consistently and consciously at your craft is the only way there.
Good luck.
